Shutes Cemetery

Champlain, Clinton County, New York

• This cemetery was transcribed by Hugh McLellan on May 21, 1917, Sept. 22, 1929, May 26, 1935, May 14, 1939, and Oct. 10, 1943.
• McLellan wrote: "This graveyard, known as the Shute Cemetery, is shown on "Beer's Atlas of Clinton County" on Lot 109 of the "Smith and Graves Patent" , about two miles south-east of the Village of Champlain. Nearly a third of the stones have fallen or are broken, and the enclosure is now completely overgrown. Many of the early settlers of the town are buried here."
• These records are part of what is known as the McLellan Cemetery Records. Beginning in 1933, Hugh McLellan, his son, Charles Woodbury “Woody” McLellan, and his daughter-in-law, Hulda (Bredenburg) McLellan traveled to various cemeteries throughout Clinton County copying the inscriptions from cemetery stones. Upon his death, these records were to have been donated to Cornell University. However, Dr. Allan Everest of SUNY Plattsburgh convinced the McLellan family to keep the records locally, and they were eventually donated to SUNY Plattsburgh. Complete sets of these records are also available at the Plattsburgh Public Library, the Clinton County Historian's office in Plattsburgh, and the Northern New York American-Canadian Genealogical Society in Keeseville, New York. Each Town Historian has a copy of their segment as well.
• In September 2010, Anthony W. McPherson sent the following: "After several years of trying to find the burial place of Antoine Paulin, I finally found it. It is on a small rise, almost completely encircled by trees at the end of a two-rut farm road. Regardless of what any GPS, or computer mapping route planner tells you... the signs at the ends of the road state that it is off the Rapid Rd. in Champlain, Clinton County, NY. It is apparently on private property, but the owners were unavailable. I didn't see a house (mail box) number at this location, but just down the road ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE 3/10ths of a mile, was "235 Rapid Rd." The rutted farm road is nearer the owner's house. If all else fails and they change the name of the roads, or the road signs vanish, the location of the cemetery is 44 degrees, 57' 11" N by 73 degrees 25' 37" W."
