Tredwell Graveyard

Beekmantown, Clinton County, New York

• This cemetery was transcribed by Hugh McLellan on May 21, 1935.
• McLellan wrote: "This private cemetery is located on the east of Route 9, about three miles north of Plattsburgh. It stands on the old Tredwell farm, several rods from the road, in pasture. The original home of Judge Tredwell stood near the lake shore, and was torn down about 1870.
• The burial plot is a small rectangle, surrounded by an iron pipe railing set in rough-hewn granite posts; a large modern granite monument, bearing the name TREDWELL, stands on the west half of the lot, nearest the road, while the graves are behind it, in a single row of five graves, with the slave's grave across the foot of Judge Tredwells, thus:
  
• In May, 1935, the Saranac Chapter, D.A.R., leveled the lot, and placed the stones, set in cement, over the respective graves, and repaired the railing."
• These records are part of what is known as the McLellan Cemetery Records. Beginning in 1933, Hugh McLellan, his son, Charles Woodbury “Woody” McLellan, and his daughter-in-law, Hulda (Bredenburg) McLellan traveled to various cemeteries throughout Clinton County copying the inscriptions from cemetery stones. Upon his death, these records were to have been donated to Cornell University. However, Dr. Allan Everest of SUNY Plattsburgh convinced the McLellan family to keep the records locally, and they were eventually donated to SUNY Plattsburgh. Complete sets of these records are also available at the Plattsburgh Public Library, the Clinton County Historian's office in Plattsburgh, and the Northern New York American-Canadian Genealogical Society in Keeseville, New York. Each Town Historian has a copy of their segment as well.
