CHATEAUGAY -- Helen Holcombe passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone, N.Y.
Helen Jean Hunter was born in Burke, N.Y., on July 18, 1924, the eighth of nine children born to Howard and Mary (Vaugh) Hunter. She graduated from Chateaugay High School in 1942.
She married Howard Holcombe on May 19, 1944. Together they farmed Hillcrest Dairy Farm on Route 11, east of Chateaugay, for many years. Relatives and friends often visited the farm and enjoyed their warm and friendly hospitality. Howard predeceased her on Aug. 5, 1984.
Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Chateaugay, a life member of the Frontier Chapter of The Eastern Star 203, Earlville Ladies Guild and the American Legion Women's Auxiliary Post 875 in Chateaugay. She was an election inspector for District 2 for many years. Helen was a judge and an exhibitor at the Franklin County Fair for many years, as well.
Helen is survived by four daughters and four sons-in-law, Brenda and Don Conners of Connecticut, Janice and Russ Cobb of California. Nancy and Art Malark of Chateaugay and Diane and Jerry Holmes of Chateaugay; and two sons and one daughter-in-law, Gary Holcombe of Pennsylvania and Bill and Brenda Holcombe of Chateaugay. Helen is also survived by eight grandchildren, Terri Palma, Tracy Grobard, Jason Malark, Jennifer Schuler, Julie Hungerford, Jeff Holcombe, Arielle Holmes and Greg Holmes; and six great-grandchildren, Chloe, Lucas and Sydney Palma, Addison Grobard, Kolby Paye and Aislyn Hungerford. Three sisters-in-law also survive her, Vedora Maloney, Ruth Heffernan Dramis and Jean Hoy. Several loving nieces and nephews also survive Helen.
Besides her husband, Helen was predeceased by her parents; an infant daughter, Lorraine; and granddaughter, Jessica Malark. Helen's sisters, Vera, Betty and Dorothy; and brothers, Francis, Maurice, Warren, Donald and Ross, also predeceased her.
Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Monday, March 3, 2008 from 4 to 8 p.m. American Legion Women's Auxiliary Post 875 in Chateaugay will have their ritual service at 7:15 p.m. and Frontier Chapter of the Eastern Star 203 will have their ritual service at 7:45 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Chateaugay United Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Bond officiating. Burial will take place in Eastside Cemetery, Chateaugay, in the spring.
